14/0 Penn Senator workhorse vs Lever Drag reels
I usually tend to lean more towards an aggressive side a majority of the time, it just all depends though, I will scale back when I am going after a monster tiger and dont want to pull a hook or screw something else up, but as far as physically being able to stand it, I'm 24 and in great shape, and also will have friends, good pliers, and a knife there to keep me from turning a fishing trip into a ski trip
so I can get away with using the shorter stand up rods and usually lean on them pretty hard with a good harness and belt, I think I'm going to try and find an avet 80 if I can. I think with a good heavy braid/ topshot setup that it will be fine most of the time. I also know from personal experience though that no matter what sometimes its not going to be enough. Does anyone know of any avet 80's in good used condition that theyre wanting to move? Also, does anyone know what the approx drag specs are on the 14/0 Senator? I know there are variables, I have looked for them and can't seem to find them on here anywhere.
35 lbs for a standard 14 or 16....60lbs of drag for my upgraded 14/0
On the smaller end of this spectrum my Curado 300E can stop a ray faster then my dads old penns with 300 yards of 20lb, that little reel has only let me down once when I was dropped off a kayak in the surf and dragged for 50 yards on the bottom, it has sand every where, but after a reel service was as good as new.
In my opinion the newer reels are better, they have waterproof, sand resistant, and corrosion resistant reels these days, but the old penns are definatly simpler. I think if they made a waterproof, sand resistant and corrosion resistant reel that could hold 1200/130 and had 80lb of drag they would be the all over the shore shark fisherman scene, but the problem is everyone and his brother has boats these days so companies are focused on large amounts of power from smaller packages.
If they start working with the land based angler in mind, I am sure they will build a reel that will make the old 14/0s antiques

Tiagra 130- 1000yds of 130. Penn International 130- 950yds of 130lb mono. A 14/0 packs on what? 750-800yds of 130lb mono depending on which brand/dia you go with. The pricetag and history in the old 14/0's and 16/0's and trust is what keeps them in my hands

Everol 18/0 and Santiago 130 both hold 1200plus of 130lb mono and are all of the above with over 100#s of drag........

So why don't more people have Everols for the monsters?

I would say people use what works that they see in person. Very few fish everols or the new Fin nors, due to the price being a lot higher than your average senators. For example, a few people tried out Avet and BAM a ton of them are used for LBSF now. I have personally owned 4 4/0, 4 4/0w, 4 6/0, 2 6/0w, 2 9/0, 2 14/0 and 1 16/0 senators all at the same time and have since sold ALL of them and fished a 4/0 everol, 6/0w everol, 9/0 everol and 12/0 everol instead. They out performed the senators hands down in every aspect INCLUDING reliability. I currently own a 14/0 everol 2spd and a 6/0w everol 2 spd and all the everols I aforementioned I have sold to close friends (due to financial issues) and the only part that has been replaced in over 3 years...a small spring attached to the clicker assembly in the 12/0 as I hooked boats in 2 separate occasions (15cent fix). In fact I didnt even grease any of the 4 reels in 2.5 years and they still hold strong.
For the beach all iuse is penn senators just bc if sand gets in them they work they still perform great. I have a senator 14/0 and 16/0 and love the line capacity, plus if you take care of them they will last forever. That said if i was on a boat i would use either leverdrags or star drags. I like the lever drags because you can adjust the drag very precise to the way you want it. I have alot of avet reels and love them. So i use senators on the beach and pier, and leverdrags on the boat, thats just my preference.
Penn 16/0 is better than any. I owned an avet 80w and it was a pain in the ass to clean the right side of it, the sand would pile up by the drag lever and wouldn't come out. The senator on the other hand, 20 second rinse of the hose, oil and grease every year and it will last forever. You lever drag guys will say I have the best reel, until next year a new one comes out and has more unnecessary drag and then buy it. People the senators have been around forever and are proven beasts!
My Friends always say I"make a science project" out of buying something like an expensive Reel or a Bow or something like that; I just do my homework,
And once I have it, take real good care of it , oil, grease what is supposed to be lubed,
I'm going to look into those EVEROLs 18/0,that EVEROL "CANYON SPECIAL" could eliminate having more reels than you can manage ,for a "smaller" reel,it covers a pretty wide range,

Do you bury your reels in the sand
lever drags have been around since the 60s I believe and have been superior to star drag reels ever since. I would consider 50 years plenty of time to be a proven beast.
I am not saying a 14/0 is not a proven work horse but comparing it to a new age 130 come on. Thats like trying to win a race with a horse and buggy compared to a 2013 lamborghini
You know this is comparing apples to watermelons but I always took along a 20# outfit to the Beach along with the heavy stuff,I got a 6" 20# casting rod [long butt] "SNOOK ASSASSIN" built on an ugly stik blank & use a 6500Ci Ambassaduer [switch off reels]
Anyway I've caught some Sharks on it that you wouldn't think it would ,
I always clean, grease & oil it when I'm thru, but the sand/salt had ruined the bearing anyway ,
Take care of your equipment ,it only takes one trip to ruin bearings sometimes..............
